Information for Travelers
Registering Your Travel in Kenya
The Department of State has no greater responsibility than the welfare and protection of U.S. citizens' abroad. U.S. citizens are encouraged to register with U.S. Embassies and Consulates when traveling overseas.
The Consular Section of US Embassy Nairobi maintains files of registered Americans and uses these lists, among other things, to develop and maintain a warden system. The information in these files is protected by the Privacy Act and cannot be shared without your permission except under life or death emergency situations. It provides basic contact information and information about your citizenship. At times the registration forms are used to verify citizenship when a passport is lost or stolen or as a means for transmitting emergency information to you from family members.
Consular Sections in Embassies have many mechanisms for maintaining contact with American citizens under their areas of responsibility. Registering with the Consular Section establishes your identity as an American citizen and provides contact information in case of a personal emergency. For example, if there has been a death in the family, and the Consular Section has been notified but the family in the United States has been unable to reach you. The information provided when you register can be used to contact you and let you know you need to call home.
Frequently there are thousands of Americans registered at each consular section. The consular staff relies on a variety of tools to provide information, which is not specific to one individual. The warden system is one mechanism for remaining in touch with Americans registered with the Consular Section.
The consular section generally contacts all registered persons via e-mail to communicate information of importance to the American Community. Another means used to provide information to U.S. Citizens is via the internet, that is, the State Department Website contains information of interest to Americans outside the US. The website is continuously updated and is the fastest means of obtaining up to the minute information. Of special interest are the Consular Information Sheets, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings. There is also valuable information about emergency and non-emergency services from obtaining a passport or visa, to voting, to registering the birth of a child born outside the United States, to preparing for an evacuation.
This web site will report if there are any changes in walk-in hours for routine services in the consular section, for example. The website also carries information about US-Kenya policy and bilateral issues.
Apart from the Internet, information can be obtained by calling the US Embassy in Nairobi (011) (254) (020)-363 6000. During working hours, you can contact the American Citizens Services office directly by dialing (011)(254)-(020)-375-3704. There is an emergency after-hours number you can call (011) (254)-(20)-363-6170 or (011) (254)-722-204 445.
Registration will make your presence and whereabouts known in case it is necessary to contact you in an emergency. No information on your whereabouts will be released without your authorization. When you register, be sure to bring your U.S. passport with you to the Embassy or you may send or fax a copy of the first two pages of your passport (so that your name, photo and signature are visible) with your complete registration form. If your passport is lost or stolen, registration will also make replacement easier and faster.
U. S. citizens in Kenya are encouraged to:
- Update their registration once a year or each time their contact information changes via e-mail Kenya_acs@state.gov. If you registered as a short-term visitor and extend your stay in Kenya beyond six months, please contact the Embassy to update your registration.
- Inform us when she or he departs from the country for a period more than a year and completes a registration form for each visit to Kenya, which will be attached to your previous registration from.
