Kenyan Port and Harbor Security Management

As part of the ongoing U.S.-Kenyan partnership, the United States is presenting a Maritime Security course to Kenyan officials for the Port of Mombasa.  The course covers basic security operations throughout the port to include the proper use of available resources.  This training incorporates worldwide standards for day to day operations as well as responding to incidents that may occur in a port.  This course combines basic port security with an understanding of how to comply with portions of the International Maritime Organization’s ISPS Code for Port Security.

In previous developments as part of the U.S.-Kenyan partnership on the coast, United States Ambassador Michael E. Ranneberger dedicated six boats provided by the United States to the Kenyan Navy in Mombasa in October 2006.  The Kenyan Minister of State for Defense Honorable Njenga Karume and Kenyan Naval Officers were also in attendance.  The boats, valued at 3 million dollars, are a major initiative to help the Government of Kenya combat insecurity and terrorism.  The patrol boats are helping Kenyan authorities combat illegal arms trafficking and drug trafficking, and will help Kenya protect its Economic Exclusion Zone.  The boats are 25 foot “Defender” boats, one 42 foot “Arch-angel” boat, and additional equipment, supplies and training.

The United States continues to work together with our Kenyan partners to improve security, health, and economic development of the people along the coast and everywhere in Kenya.
